STAGED READING OF “RACE TO THE BOTTOM”

“Page to Stage Pipeline,” a group to develop new plays, will present a staged reading of Race to the Bottom by Prospect playwright Laura Emack on Thursday, November 10, 2016, in Talbot Lecture Hall, located in Luther Bonney on the USM Portland campus. The cast includes Portland actor Jackie Oliveri, midcoast actors Beth Rowe and Jack Emack, and four USM students under the direction of Professor Assunta Kent.

Race to the Bottom vividly depicts today’s dodgy economy where mature workers get fired and their young replacements go to work for half their predecessors’ compensation. The program will run from 7 to 9:15 PM including an audience talkback. As this is the first reading of a brand-new script, the playwright welcomes critical input.

Laura Emack’s work has been produced in New York City and in Maine by Husson University Theatre (Bangor), MidCoast Actors Studio (Belfast), and by Acorn Productions in Portland during the Maine Playwrights Festival and as part of Snowlion Repertory Co.’s food-themed “The Maine Dish” in 2015.

“Page to Stage Pipeline” is free and open to the public. For additional information, please email Assunta@maine.edu, or call 780-5147.

“Broken Bridges:  A New Play by Laura Emack
In 1958 the town of Prospect elected its first female selectman, Marion Laforge, over the vigorous objections of her husband Elwood. “Broken Bridges,” a truth-inspired history play, depicts twenty-four hours of turmoil in the enduring marriage of a retired Prospect couple who had originally hailed from New York.  Like the play’s heroine, playwright Laura Emack moved to Maine from away and understands Marion’s struggle to find her place in the community. The play features husband-and-wife team Mike and Beth Rowe, familiar players to theater goers in Belfast and the Midcoast, as Elwood and Marion Laforge.  Ms. Emack’s plays have been produced in New York City and throughout Maine.  The premier performance of “Broken Bridges” will be presented as final event celebrating Prospect History Day (September 26th, 10 AM – 2PM).  The play will run from 2PM until 3PM at the Prospect Fire Station (intersection of Rte. 1A and Rte. 174.)  Admission is free with donations greatly appreciated.  For more information call 567-3437.

NEW PLAY BENEFITS BANGOR LIBRARY BUILDING FUND

Playwright Laura Emack from Prospect invites you to indulge your inner critic and support the Bangor Public Library. On Saturday, May 31, Snowlion Repertory Company will present Emack’s new script Power Play followed by an audience talkback. Bangor actor Irene Dennis, who coordinates the Library’s monthly play-reading group, will lead the discussion.

Power Play enters little-mined dramatic territory in the high-stakes world of college sports. The action happens at a fictional college in Vermont, but University of Maine fans will relate to challenges facing the new men’s hockey coach. The team's resurgence falters when Shane Reilly, star freshman goalie, gets into academic hot water. Both coach and player face crises in which integrity wages battle against the need to win.

Emack's work has been seen in New York City and at various Maine settings including the “Maine Playwrights Festival” and Penobscot Theatre’s “Northern Writes” New Play Festival. In December 2012, Husson University Theatre (HUT) produced the world premiere of The Easter Parade.  Emack looks forward to seeing three short plays (Backseat Driver, A Talking Scale and The Day the Music Died) performed by Midcoast Actors’ Studio of Belfast, directed by Jason Bannister, in October 2014.

Snowlion Repertory Company is based in Portland, Maine. In addition to producing cutting-edge plays and musicals, Snowlion operates Playlab, a group of playwrights and actors that meet monthly to explore new scripts written by members. Co-founder Al D’Andrea will direct the second “on book” presentation of Power Play following its Playlab debut in January 2014 and consequent revisions. Snowlion’s trip to Bangor is funded by Bangor Savings Bank and Deighan Wealth Advisors.

The Saturday-afternoon performance begins at 1:30 P.M.  on May 31.  Light refreshments will be served. Advance reservations are recommended, as seating is limited. Cost for the event is $5 per person. All “box office” proceeds are payable to the BPL Building Fund. To reserve space, call (207) 567-3437 or email LKECPA@prexar.com.

                                                FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Snowlion Repertory Theatre's Playlab meets every month to explore a new script for the stage. Prospect writer Laura Emack considers the drive well worth the effort in order to interact with other playwrights and Portland's vibrant actors. On January 9, 2014, under the direction of Al D'Andrea,  Emack's Power Play will begin its journey from page to stage.

In search of little-mined dramatic territory, Emack chose the world of college sports. While Power Play happens at a fictional college in Vermont, University of Maine fans will relate to the challenges facing the new head coach. The team's resurgence becomes threatened when Shane Reilley, star freshman goalie, gets into academic trouble. Both coach and player face crises in which integrity wages battle with the need to win.

Emack's work has been produced in New York City as well as various Maine venues. In 2012, Husson University Theatre (HUT) produced The Easter Parade at Gracie Theatre in Bangor. Her essay "Solving the Childcare Conundrum" was included in Save Wisely, Spend Happily published by the AICPA (2012). Emack is a certified public accountant who works part-time "to feed my writing habit" at Haverlock, Estey & Curran in Hampden.

Playlab readings are not open to the general public. However, the group welcomes inquiries from potential new members. Interested dramatic writers should consult the Snowlion Repertory Theatre website, Playlab tab, for more information.

BANGOR, ME – Husson University
Theatre (HUT), the student-run theatre organization on the Husson campus, will
be producing the Maine premiere of The Easter Parade on December 7 and 8 at 7:30
p.m. and on December 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gracie Theatre. The Easter Parade,
set in an accounting office, is written by local playwright, author and CPA
Laura Emack from Prospect, Maine. The producer, cast, director, designers, and
crew consists of students from Husson University and the New England School of
Communications.

Laura Emack’s play, The Easter Parade, takes place soon
after the Enron/Andersen scandal. The financial world has taken a serious blow
to its credibility and now every honest firm needs to show that they have
nothing to hide. The accounting firm, McCann and Silway, CPAs, is one of many
companies struggling in the wake of the scandal. In order to ensure a profit,
firms like McCann and Silway are forced to fire some of the help after tax
season, creating a “parade” of out-of-work CPA’s. One of the recent hires, Lucy,
played by Kaity Patnode, takes drastic steps to do anything to save her job.
Mark, played by Gabriel Clarke, isn’t keen on leaving either, but a decision he
makes ensures some hilarious dialogue and a serious change within the
firm.

Tickets are $7.00 adults /$3.00 students and are available at the
door or by visiting the HUT Facebook Page
